MCMILLIN RECEIVES FOUR BEAUTIFICATION AWARDS
----From Chula Vista----
In recognition of its efforts to enhance the overall beauty of Chula
Vista, The Corky McMillin Companies was recently honored by the city
and the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce with four Beautification Awards.“We’re extremely proud of these awards,” said Lisa Johnson, community relations director for The Corky McMillin Companies. “The entire McMillin team takes great pride in giving back to the communities in which we build. “We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to contribute to the exciting growth and development that has taken place and continues to take place in Chula Vista,” she added.
The Corky McMillin Companies’ McMillin Lomas Verdes master-planned community was responsible for two of the four awards the company received, including the award for Streetscape Design and the award for Environmental Solutions. McMillin Homes’ Terracotta neighborhood within McMillin Lomas Verdes received the award for Streetscape Design, which recognizes outstanding design in streets or sidewalks for the enhancement of community identity and beautification in the public right of way.
McMillin worked closely with architects at McKinley Associates and McCullough Landscape Architecture to develop Terracotta’s award-winning design. Visually compelling front porches are the most prominent feature of Terracotta’s creative courtyard home design. Oversized garages were moved to the rear of the homes in a concerted effort to beautify the streetscape. Each Terracotta home is accessible from an alley that leads from the street to individual garages in the back, an unusual feature that plays a key role in Terracotta’s enhanced design. The layout creates a pedestrian paseo, or promenade, surrounded by lush landscaping that meanders through the community, free of traffic.
The Environmental Solutions award, recognizing projects designed, built and operated in the most ecological and resource-efficient manner, was given to the Wolf Canyon Park ephemeral stream and detention basin. Teaming with Rick Engineering and Helix Environmental, McMillin created the Wolf Canyon detention basins and ephemeral stream to treat storm water and drive environmental advancement. The project provides a creative system of water treatment, water monitoring and habitat inducement conducive to the needs of the community and the environment as a whole.
McMillin Lomas Verdes wasn’t the only McMillin master-planned community to garner recognition, however, as the Richard Welsh Award for Outstanding Architecture for new or renovated buildings or structures was given to the Coastal Hills Swim Club, a part of the estate homes section of Rolling Hills Ranch.
The swim club’s Tuscan-style architecture creates the atmosphere of an Italian hill town. The overall Tuscan theme created by Jamie Starck Architecture is embodied throughout the patio area, which is paved with natural stone surrounded by palm, pepper and olive trees.
The Ken Lee Award for Planning and Urban Design was awarded to The Shops at San Miguel Ranch. The award recognizes projects within the city’s urban environment. The Shops at San Miguel Ranch is a 10-acre neighborhood shopping center developed by McMillin Commercial in Chula Vista.
Designed by Benson and Bohl Architects, the Mediterranean-style shopping center includes approximately 103,000 square feet of retail space, anchored by a 52,000-square-foot Albertsons. The remaining 51,000 square feet of retail space is housed in six wood-framed buildings surrounding a central plaza. The center is traditional in form with Spanish idioms, including arches, clay tile roof, wrought-iron fixtures, scalloped moldings and textured surfaces. The center’s focal point is the main plaza’s dramatic tower element and fountain.
The Beautification Award entries were judged based on the success with which each project met individual category requirements. Judging criteria included design resolution, design advancement, technical advancement and environmental advancement. Each project nominated was judged individually, not in competition with each other.
